A century of care at Ganga Talao.

Hindu Maha Sabha Mauritius was founded in 1925. We care for the temples and precinct at Grand Bassin, and for the pilgrims who walk there.

Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius

Heartfelt congratulations on the centennial. Inspired by social reform and India’s independence movement, HMS has taught the Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita and, since 1925, stewarded the Maha Shivratri pilgrimage to Ganga Talao. Best wishes for the next hundred years.

Mr Nidesh Rajkoomar

President of Hindu Maha Sabha

On this auspicious centennial, I honour everyone who has built and sustained the Hindu Maha Sabha since 27 February 1925 — a house of devotion, service, and care for Ganga Talao.

Who we are

The sabha behind the mandir.

From daily Rudrabhishek to Maha Shivratri — among the largest Hindu pilgrimages outside India — our priests, volunteers and committee keep the shore of the sacred lake open to all.

Hindu Maha Sabha is one of Mauritius’s principal Hindu organisations. Under leaders such as Beekrumsing Ramlallah, the sabha secured land and roads around Grand Bassin so that temples, shelters and the national pilgrimage could grow. In 1960 it helped found the Mauritius Sanatan Dharma Temples Federation. In 1966 the first lakeside Shiva temple was inaugurated. In 1972 Ganga jal was mixed into the crater lake and the place took the name Ganga Talao.

Today our seat remains at Sri Kashi Vishwanath Shakti Peeth — daily worship, festivals, academics, and diaspora service through HMSAI.
